Suspected robber nabbed after junior high student stakeout
A junior high school girl whose bag was stolen in a Tokyo park helped apprehend the suspected thief after staking out the scene of the crime with friends, law enforcers said.
The second-year junior high school girl, aged 13, was at a park in the Tokyo city of Higashikurume with two friends on the evening of Feb. 5, when her bag, which contained 3,600 yen in cash, was taken from the front basket of her bicycle. The students noticed a suspicious man had disappeared along with the bag.
The following day after school, the girl and two other students began stakeouts at the park. At around 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 7, they spotted 40-year-old Masaki Miyata, a resident of Niiza, Saitama Prefecture. As he resembled the suspicious man from the day before, the students phoned police, and called for assistance from another male student.
When a friend of the victim approached Miyata and said, "You stole a bag, didn't you?" he fled. The male student caught up with him in front of Miyata's home about 400 meters away, leading to his apprehension.
The next station is Niiza.
